Ratchet

Ratchet is a subgenre of hip hop, pioneered by DJ Mustard. It has downtempo Florida breaks-style percussion with rapped lyrics, often dark menacing melodies and deep bass. The lyrics are often about what it's like for an African American musician to deal with becoming rich. It is more minimal than Trap. Yo Gotti's "Down in the DM" featuring Nicki Minaj or "Don't Hurt Me" by DJ Mustard and NIcki Minaj are examples.
