The New Musical Express weekly magazine has championed British bands since it was first distributed in 1952, mainly in the rock and pop genres and more recently various indie rock bands. It is regarded by some that bands like Manic Street Preachers, The Strokes, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys have become popular partly because of the NME's coverage.
